Dr Caitriona Guinane

education and career profile 

Dr Caitriona Guinane graduated from UCC with a BSc (1H) and a PhD in Microbiology. She was a postdoctoral researcher in the University of Edinburgh and was a research officer in Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark for 7 years.  Dr Guinane is currently a lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences. She has authored 47 peer reviewed manuscripts (including 3 book chapters) and has a H-index = 23; (Google scholar, May 2019). Dr Guinane has been an author on manuscripts published in high impacting journals including Nature Genetics, MBio, PLoS pathogens, Molecular Microbiology, Genome Biology & Evolution, Proceedings in the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Dr Guinane’s research interests and in the area of gut health, the impact of our intestinal microbiome with a view to probiotic and functional food development.

  • Development of a microbially-derived therapy against Fusobacterium nucleatum, a bacterial pathogen linked with colorectal cancer. CIT RíSAM funded project (2017-).
